BRONZE CAST OF THE WARWICK VASE BY EUGENE CORNU
An important and large bronze cast of the Warwick vase by Eugene Cornu of Paris, raised on rouge marble socle bearing a label ‘Cercle des Patineurs / Prix de Souscription Handicap / 26 Mai 1877’
This colossal marble vase was excavated at Hadrian Villa 1771 and purchased by Sir William Hamilton. He sold it to the Earl of Warwick who for a long time forbade copies to be made. It was apparently the first item of Napoleons list of the works of art to be expropriated after the conquest of Great Britain.
Eugene Cornu was the first division bronziste- fondeur, working in the second half 19th Century.
