GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARMCHAIR
A George III mahogany armchair of unusual design, the crossgrain veneered wheel back with palm leaves radiating from a central leaf carved boss, the arms terminating in a delicate cabochon raised on square chamfer legs with stop fluting, linked by stretchers.
This chair relates to a published group of chairs, notably an armchair illustrated in the dictionary of English furniture, ex collection of Sir Sydney Greville, and dating to Circa 1785. The present example lacks the carved husk swags of the later chair, the square legs and stretchers indicating a date of some 10 years earlier. Also of Norman Adams collection P.74, a pair of similar chairs.
CINOA International Art Treasures Exhibition at the V & A. 1962, a set of 6 chairs (No 87).
