Patrick Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh on 7 January 1787, eldest son and pupil of the Scottish landscape painter Alexander Nasmyth. He came to London in 1810 and his talent quickly propelled him to fame, even though during his early career he lost the use of his right hand and had to learn to work with his left. Although his subject matter was usually found in the countryside around London, his style was modelled on the Dutch 17th Century artists, especially Hobbema. His landscapes are admired for their meticulous painting, beauty of technique and refined draughtsmanship. Nasmyth exhibited his work at the Royal Academy on a regular basis, also at the British Institution and he was a founder member of the Society of British Artists. Patrick died on 17 August 1831 in Lambeth, London.
His studio sale was held at Christies on 18 June 1831.
