William L. Wyllie was a painter and etcher of marine and coastal subjects, in oil and watercolour. He was the son of William Morison Wyllie and brother of Charles William Wyllie. Studied at Heatherley’s and Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Gold Medal in 1869. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1868, the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, the New Watercolour Society and the Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhere. He was an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1889, and a Royal Academician in 1907. He painted harbour and dock scenes, especially in London, coastal scenes, and pictures of the British fleet, which were well-known through engravings and reproductions. Works by him are in the Tate Gallery, Bristol and Liverpool Art Galleries. His son Harold Wyllie was also a marine painter.
