Superb miniature Vizigipatam ivory bureau cabinet

A superb Anglo Indian miniature sandalwood and ivory bureau cabinet, made in Vizigapatam, India at the end of the 18th century. The rectangular top with a faux-dentil cornice over two doors flanked on either side by architectural columns, the front, fall, drawer and sides all enriched with foliate and floral decoration, the twin doors open to reveal an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes, the one long drawer over six pigeon holes which in turn are over three banks of three drawers all decorated with pavilions and landscapes, the fall of the bureau opens to reveal more drawers and pigeon holes with foliate decoration, together with column-fronted document slides, beneath the bureau is one large drawer, all supported on shaped bracket feet.
This engraved bureau-cabinet, serving as portable desk jewel-case and dressing-box, is designed as a miniature ‘desk and bookcase’. Engraved tablets wreathed by floral ‘chintz’ fashioned borders, portray magnificent villa landscapes that would harmonise with the Georgian reception dressing apartments that were hung with landscape prints.
This artistic India-flowered furniture, crafted in exotic ivory veneer, was retailed in Madra and Calcutta by the English and Dutch East India Companies, but it was primarily manufactured in Vizagapatam, on the northern Coromandel Coast.
