A large and imposing Satsuma earthenware floor vase, the skittle shaped body cleverly potted to resemble a basket with a tied rope handle round the neck, painted throughout in delicate overglaze enamel colours and gilding with roundels of flowers floating like bubbles between brocade bands.

This vase is a fabulous way to start the exhibition. It is the largest vase in the collection and also features an intricate, highly unusual basket-weave ground, which seems to be a distinctive feature of this group of floor vases. (See also pages 12, 18, 22 and 40). The decoration, both in terms of subject matter and in the delicate colour scheme, is our first glimpse of a genre which will run as a common thread through all the other pieces in the collection. Audsley-Bowes Plate XXII shows examples of both the basket-weave ground (Division 1) and the medallion decoration (Division 4).

As far as the subject matter is concerned we can see the full glory of Japanese flora in this single piece. Each flower is so perfectly drawn that it is easy to identify prunus, pomegranates, clematis, iris, peonies, gourds, carnations, lilies, maples, wistaria, hydrangea and the ubiquitous chrysanthemum at a swift glance. The drawing is exquisite and the attention to detail meticulous.
