FINE PALAIS ROYAL SEWING BOX
A fine Palais Royal mother-of-pearl and ormolu sewing box of rectangular form, the lid with an oval pearl panel within pearl spandrels outlined in gilt metal and with a Greek key border, the sides with rectangular panels of pearl within a gilt metal framework decorated with the repeating Pansy motif of The Palais Royal, and raised on claw feet with flowerhead mounts. The interior with a mirror to the lid within a fancy cord frame over a shallow cream velvet tray with floral embroidered pincushion, a set of six mother-of-pearl snowflake winders, a mother-of-pearl thimble with enamel pansy motif and double gilt borders, a barrel form tape measure with gilt bindings, tape within, two bodkin earspoons, a feather handled dip pen with gilt shield, a tambour hook, a stiletto with floral cornucopia handle, a fixed blade knife with gilt floral mount and leaf carved handle, an eraser with gilt floral mount and leaf carved handle, steel bladed scissors, the arms carved and pierced with flowers, vases and birds to oval anthemion loops, a paper knife with leaf carved handle and gilt metal anthemion on the terminal, a seal with leaf carved vase stem, the oval terminal with gold shield, a quiver form needlecase, a circular box the cover with enamel pansy motif to lid, a circular powder container, a cut glass scent bottle with silver gilt screw cover complete with stopper, and a scallop bowl caddy spoon, complete with squab and original steel key with spiral mount and beaded bow.
Provenance; By descent to the owner from her Godmother Kit Coryton, of Pentille Castle Cornwall. Mrs Kathleen Wedgwood Coryton, always known as “Kit” was the widow of Major Jeffrey Coryton M.C. who inherited Pentille Castle and the estate on the death of his father in 1968. He died in 1980 and Kit Coryton lived alone at the Castle until her death in September 2007 at the age of 90.
