WOODLAND BRIDGE
The Woodland Bridge, reveals a sense of depth and perspective and increasing elaboration of detail. A steeply arched bridge, bordered by distant woods, delicate and lacy, spans a stream which flows between banks of massive tree clumps.
In the foreground a single tree with exceptionally slender stems supports a large bird’s nest, while the flower-stubbed river bank on which it grows shows a line of seated labybirds and energetic elves silhouetted against the water. The most fascinating part of the design is to be found in the roots of the tree; greatly out of proportion to the apparently frail growth which they anchor to the earth, thick, gnarled and twisted, they form hidey holes for tiny trolls.
Of the original Fairyland designs, the Woodland Bridge in its variations was probably Daisy’s favourite, as she used it more frequently than any other.
POPLAR TREES
This was the first design produced under the generic title of Fairyland and is entirely scenic.
It is one of the Black Fairyland designs in which the regularly spaced Poplar Trees reveal different views of an Italianate park with cypresses, statues and a fountain, a bridge over a river and an architectural feature which appears to be a viaduct. The poplars are in two shades of green except for one which is orange; the distant views are purple, blue and reddish-orange. In the foreground is a large rock, this together with the ground and the sky are black, the latter having golden swirls, the Cobble bead is printed on the lower edge and footrim in gold. This was always used on the outside of bowls.
