The Sailor's Return, Jack at Home
Signed
Oil on relined canvas
This lovely oil painting, The Sailors Return, Jack at Home, is on a relined canvas, signed in the bottom left hand corner, and still in its original frame. The painting was titled on the back of the canvas and a photograph of this is available. The charming subject matter and the quality of the painting means that you can keep looking at this and spotting something new every time. The toy sailboat on the floor, possibly carved by the sailor as a present, the parrot by the window and many other interesting features.
Richard Poate (fl. 18451869), in 1829 had commenced the profession of Miniature Painter and Drawing Master at his Academy, 9, King Street, Portsea. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1845 and continued to exhibit until 1869. During the 1840s he worked from his residence at 35, St. Georges Square, Portsea, which was, and still is, but a stones throw from Portsmouth Harbour. By the 1860s he had moved to the more fashionable address at Pembroke Street, Portsmouth, which was near the High Street, the Garrison Church and the Cambridge Barracks. He exhibited three works at the SS, including a portrait, Harvest Time, and this painting, The Sailors Return, Jack at Home. The City of Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery have a number of his paintings, mostly portraits of civic dignitaries, but his known paintings and later his photographs connected with the military, are of great interest.
