John F Tennant was a painter of genre, landscape and coastal scenes. Mostly self-taught, although he did receive lessons from William Anderson. At first he painted historical genre subjects, mostly taken from Walter Scott, but soon turned to landscape, for which his better known. He exhibited mostly at the Society of British Artists Suffolk Street, where he became a member in 1842; also at the Royal Academy from 1820-67, the British Institution and the New Watercolour Society. He lived for a long time in Devon and Wales. Now he is best known for his river and coastal scenes, he painted in a clear and colourful style
