Alpine Villages (A Pair)Signed and dated 1879
Oil on Canvas

Born in Draveil: French School. A marine and landscape painter. He studied art under Durand-Brager and Isabey. He made his debut at The Salon in Paris 1855 and from that time he exhibited regularly, both at The Salon and Les Salons des Artistes Franais. He concentrated particularly on stormy landscapes around the Brittany Coast and the North Sea. He won a Bronze medal for his work on seascapes in 1892. Kuwasseg is one of the more striking painters of European towns and waterways. Always beautifully detailed his work demonstrates both enormous vigor whilst retaining considerable delicacy particularly evident in these two paintings with their powerful mountainous backdrop and fine use of his palette to produce delicate reflections on the water and masterful sense of movement and depth in the portrayal of town-folk.
