John Clayton Adams was a Surrey landscape painter who lived in Edmonton, London and in Ewhurst, Surrey, from 1873. Subjects mainly views in southern Surrey, and areas surrounding Ewhurst. His landscapes, painted in a rich broad technique, are natural and realistic, and full of feeling for light and colour. Adams is one of the most individual of the late Victorian landscape painters, and work is highly sought after. Adams exhibited at the London Royal Academy between 1863 and 1893, and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Grosvenor Gallery and the New Gallery. The Victoria & Albert Museum holds his work.
