ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN KARABAGH


This runner is in very good condition for its age, with the background colour in black, which usually the black dyed wool will react with air and oxidisation takes place, which is a very good indication of its age.
Karabagh rugs and runners are eagerly sought after by collectors as well as designers, having one of the oldest and most varied design traditions of any antique Caucasian rugs. This typical design is descended from the classical Caucasian runner of the eighteenth Century, as Caucasese was part of Persia till mid nineteenth Century, Caucasian rugs are heavily influenced by Persian artisans. The appearance of the Christian cross in this runner can sometimes be associated with rugs woven by the Armenians.
