The Keramic Art of Japan By George Ashdown Audsley and Lord James Bowes A quarto edition bound in red morocco and embossed with Mount Fuji in gilt, Liverpool & London, Henry Sotheran, 1881. Single volume hard back first edition. 30 plates approx. half of them colour chromolithograph plates by Didot, Paris (Bauer, Lith.). Second edition of an important study on the Keramic arts of Japan. This edition includes new information published after the first edition and an introductory essay. Subsequent chapters discuss the different Keramic manufacturers and provinces in Japan. In 1875 Audsley collaborated with his friend James Lord Bowes, a wealthy Liverpool Wool Merchant and collector of Japanese art, to produce The Keramic Art of Japan. This was one of the first and most important books on Japanese art to be produced in the English language and, like many of Audsley’s works, it continues to be a popular classic publication still in print.
