Walter Frederick Roofe Tyndale was born in Bruges. Came to England when sixteen. At eighteen studied at the Antwerp Academy, and later in Paris under Bonnat and the Belgium artist Jan Van Beers. At first, he worked in oils, painting portraits and genre. From c 1890 took up watercolour, being influenced by Claude Hayes and Helen Allingham, who was a friend. Travelled widely on the continent, Middle East and Japan. Lived in Bath (1880); London (1882 & 1914); Eltham, Kent (1885); Haslemere, Surrey (1888 & 1894); Bridgenorth, Salop (1893) and Venice (1925). Illustrated many topographical books, including ‘An Artist in Italy’ (1910). Also, ‘Wessex’ and ‘Worcestershire’, published by A&C Black. Exhibited: RA, RBA, RI, ROI, RHA, Fine Art Society Dowdeswell Galleries & etc.
