A fine pair of early Georgian III mahogany chairs with Gothic backs, lancet pierced and quartrefoils, carved with foliage and āCā scrolls, good original surface and colour. Numbered 1 and III.
Interestingly the nearest example to this design that we have found is that of a set of four chairs in the Winterthur Museum (accession no. G60.1066.2), made in Philadelphia circa 1765, which differ in having cabriole legs rather than square chamfered legs as this pair.
This pair of chairs, whilst certainly English, are the direct precursors of the Philadelphia chairs.
